Being yoga teachers who have spent years of practice here in the so-called Yoga Capital of the World, we have discovered that when most people come here, it is because of the physical challenge of asana, yet many remain here because of the mental clarity of meditation.

We would like to sit down with you today, in a sense, over a warm cup of herbal tea and speak to you about one of my very favorite practices, Trataka meditation. Trataka is a gorgeous place of departure whether you need to sharpen your mind, relax your troubled thoughts, or explore the spiritual legacy of the Rishikesh yoga school.

What Is Trataka Meditation?

Trataka is in fact listed among the Shatkarma in the old Hatha Yoga books—one of the six methods of purification. It is, however, unique due to its ability to combine physical cleansing and intense meditation.

“Trataka” simply means to look or to stare. It is accomplished by simply staring at a point (usually a candle flame) without blinking until the eyes start to water. It is a technique of building Dharana (concentration) at the most basic level.

Imagine your mind is a puppy that is hyperactive. It’s always pawing around, leaping from this to that. You see, by providing that “puppy” with just one thing to stare at, you eventually train it to be still.

Why do we practice Trataka in Rishikesh?

Although you can do this anywhere, it has a certain magic about doing the Trataka meditation in Rishikesh. The Himalayan energy and closeness to the sacred Ganga form a natural state of Sattvic (pure), which makes entering into a meditative state a lot easier.

Science and Spirituality of the Gaze

A question you may be asking yourself is, “Why is simply looking at a candle beneficial to my brain?” As we bring our bodily gaze, our mental gaze comes with it. We feel in yoga that a direct connection can be drawn between the eye movement and the mind movement. Ever noticed that your eyes can sort of spring about when you are agitated? When we look directly without moving our eyes, then we are telling our nervous system to relax.

Physiologically speaking, Trataka activates the pineal gland and is reported to have an effect of balancing the third eye chakra (Ajna Chakra). Our numerous students experience that their intuition becomes sharper after a regular practice, and they get a much better sleep.

Trataka: The Stepwise Practice Guide.

Would you like to have a go at this at home or in the room of your ashram? Here is one easy method to start with.

1. Set the Stage

Get a room with no light and no draft (you do not want the flame to dance too much). Sit in a cross-legged posture such as Sukhasana or Padmasana. Stay tall with your shoulders relaxed.

2. Position the Candle

Put a candle on a strong stand between 2 and 3 feet of you. The flame of the candle must be directly at eye level. This is important; otherwise, you will put pressure on your neck or back.

3. The Laying Eyes (Bahir Trataka)

Light the candle and have a few in-breaths to get yourself straight. Gazing at the brightest part of the flame, which is usually right above the wick, fix your eyes gently.

The Rule: Try not to blink.

The Feeling: Eyes are soft. Do not look so stern. Strain your eye. To see. But have a glance. Of the fire with wonder.

4. The Inwards Gaze (Antar Trataka)

Keep looking until you notice that your eyes are getting tired or are beginning to tear. Close your eyes at that. You will probably have an afterimage of the flame in your mind’s eye (space between your eyebrows).

Focus on this internal image. Provided that it is moving, slowly push it towards the center. After the image turns off completely, you can open your eyes and repeat the process or sit in silence a few minutes.

The Merits: Why We Like Trataka.

Trataka is a yoga practice that we frequently present in our Rishikesh yoga retreats due to its almost immediate benefits. Here’s what you can expect:

Better Concentration: It’s a workout for your concentration. It is very useful for students or professionals who are affected by brain fog.

Vision Health: It makes the muscles of the eye stronger, and people believe it assists in minor eye problems (however, always consult a doctor beforehand!).

Emotional Balance: It assists in clearing unspent emotions and also brings inner peace.

Sleeplessness: A short Trataka practice before sleep can be used to calm a busy mind and will enable a person to fall into a deep sleeping state.

Important Safety Measures of a good practice.

We hate to mention it, but we love this practice, yet we must do it with respect and care. Yoga is not harmful but harmless!

1. Eye Conditions

In case of glaucoma or severe myopia or recent eye surgery, you had better skip the candle-gazing. Even now you may go on practicing the Trataka, though you close your eyes.

2. Don’t Force It

There is no blinking rule. With sore or aching eyes, blink! Your capability of maintaining the gaze will improve with time.

3. Mind the Light

Do not practice in the sun. What makes the mind concentrate is the contrast of the flame, and thus a dark or dim room is preferable.

4. Psychological Sensitivity

Due to the ability of Trataka to raise hidden thoughts or visions, anyone who has a history of hallucinations or intense mental distress should practice directly under the watch of an experienced yoga teacher in Rishikesh.

Why Rishikesh for Your Yoga Journey?

In case you want to get a true experience, one of the best things to do first is to search for Trataka meditation in Rishikesh. It is not only a city; it is a school of wisdom in existence. Whether you are living in an ashram in Tapovan or a retreat center in Laxman Jhula, the combination of thousands of practitioners helps to boost your own practice.

We have a vision of preserving these ancient traditions at Rishikesh and making it available to the contemporary seeker. Trataka is not the point of treating a candle; it is a way of treating yourself.

Tips for Beginners

Start Small: You will need no more than 2-5 minutes during your first week.

Show Up: Magic, as with any habit, comes when you attend to it daily.

Wash Your Eyes: Splash your eyes with cool, clean water after the practice. This is very refreshing, and it helps to get any “heaviness cleared.

Final Thoughts

At Maa Shakti Yog, our intention is to help you reconnect with that stillness, whether you practice with us in Rishikesh or carry it into your daily life.

Trataka is a reminder that in the world of unceasing distraction, much power resides in deciding to see only one thing. It teaches us that as we quiet the body and fix the gaze, the soul at last has the opportunity of speaking.

It is our hope that this guide will assist you on your way to inner clarity. Should you ever be walking around the streets of our lovely Rishikesh, we hope you will find time to stop and have a sit and light a candle and find the quietness there.

Namaste, dear friends.
