As kids, so many of us have believed that yoga is about how deep we can go, how long we can stay in each posture, or how fast we can get from asana to asana. However, after years of teaching and practicing, we can assure you that the breathing spaces in between the poses are where the true magic occurs.

Let’s get into the importance of rest between poses in yoga and how you can begin to utilize rest to gain so much more from each session.

Why Rest Between Yoga Poses Actually Matters

In yoga we are not just moving our bodies; we are also using our breath, our nervous system, and our minds. Each position challenges and stretches us physically and energetically. If we don’t give our body time to rest between the poses, then we are asking our body to give and give and give without ever receiving.

Remember that it’s a conversation. Without taking a pause to listen, nothing is really absorbed if one person is constantly talking. The same goes for our body during practice. Rest is when our muscles, joints, and nerves have a chance to absorb what has just occurred, digest the positive aspects, and get ready for the next steps. That’s why seasoned practitioners and teachers alike always resort to one thing: the importance of rest between yoga poses.

What does the body do during rest?

You are not doing anything; we’re usually asked if I am just lying there or sitting quietly. The short answer is yes indeed.

The heart rate starts to normalize, we start to breathe more deeply, and our nervous system calms down during rest periods between yoga poses. This is where we begin to let go of the tension in our muscles that we created in the pose. It’s also when our body has the time to get the stretch, strength, or balance challenge we just gave it.

If we didn’t have that break between efforts, then we would be fired from one effort to the next without ever allowing our body to catch up. This can cause fatigue, tightness, and even the “practice burnout” that makes yoga feel more like a chore than a fun workout to live by.

Rest Between Yoga Poses and the Breath Connection

Also Read: How Long Should a Yoga Session Be? The Honest Truth

Breath is really the thread that holds the whole yoga session together, and it’s here that the importance of rest between yoga poses is increased. When we adopt an uncomfortable stance, our breathing can shorten or become shallow or even stop. As we leave this position and use our rest time, we can breathe naturally and slowly.

This is more important than people think. Regular breathing relieves our brain of the idea that we are safe and reduces our stress and anxiety. So, the next time you’re in a pose, such as Warrior II, or one of the deep backbends, pause for five to ten breaths before moving in and out. Be aware of how the breath gets softer. This softening is being done for your whole system.

How Rest Between Yoga Poses Supports Flexibility and Strength

Believe it or not, but periods of rest in yoga poses can also increase flexibility and strength over time, not decrease. A stretched muscle will undergo micro adjustments in the muscle fibers. When we rush into the next pose without resting, we don’t allow these fibers to adjust to their new, slightly extended position.

Strength-building poses are no exception. The muscles make their way into a certain pose, such as chair pose or plank, and develop strength through muscular activity, while the revival process to real, lasting strength is actually carried out in the recovery after the pose. That’s why we always tell our students, “More rest equals more progress.”

Finding the Right Balance: Rest Between Yoga Poses Without Losing Flow

Yes, we know what some of you might be thinking: does too much rest break the flow of a practice, particularly one that involves Vinyasa? This is a fair question, and the answer is all about balance.

Rest between yoga poses does not mean sitting down for minutes between each and every yoga pose. Sometimes it’s as simple as one full, conscious breath in a neutral position before transitioning. Sometimes, however, a longer rest period of 30 seconds and even a minute after a serious pose or after a deep backbend can be helpful.

We like to think of it this way: use the intensity of the pose to determine the duration of the rest. The relaxing stretch may require only a couple of breaths of pause. It may be necessary to take a more complete rest, such as child’s pose, before going forward if you are in a deep hip opener or deep core sequence.

Simple Ways to Add Rest Between Yoga Poses to Your Practice

Also Read: Starting Yoga After 40: Why It’s the Best Move We’ll Ever Make

We frequently are asked how to actually incorporate more rest into a practice without it making it awkward or “doing it wrong. Some easy tips we share with our students:

Hold the pose of Child’s Pose after any deep back bend or tough standing sequence. This is a relaxed lying position where the spine and hips relax.

Include Savasana breaks throughout practice, not just at the end. Even the most annoying jet lag can be averted with one minute of quiet.

Focus on the breath count between poses, rather than rushing to the next pose. Three to five slow breaths will make a difference.

Tune in to your body. When muscles are shivering or breath is short, it is typically a signal for your body to rest between yoga poses before moving on.

These are just little extras that won’t detract from your practice but will enhance it.

Between Yoga Poses, Rest Is Where Mindfulness Lives.

There is something so beautiful about the pause between yoga postures, because it is natural and invites mindfulness. Our mind is very active when we’re running from pose to pose, making mental notes of the next pose or possible self-doubt about performance. However, in the quiet moments of rest, we have the opportunity to feel what is going on in our body at this moment.

This is where students tell us they see the biggest changes in their practice not in their poses but in between. That is when they become aware, and yoga suddenly isn’t just physical; it’s reflective and calming.

Bringing It All Together

Rest between yoga poses isn’t a weakness or a break from “real practice,” but actually it’s a crucial component of the healing and effective practice of yoga. It provides a moment for us to absorb, a moment for our breath to settle, and a moment for our mind to simply be here.

So, the next time you roll your mat out, take it just a little slower. Don’t rush or feel guilty about resting between yoga postures. You will feel better, breathe easier, and become more aware of what your body is telling you. This mindful approach to practice is also an important part of the wider yoga journey explored through Maa Shakti Yog and similar traditional yoga practices.

Rest between yoga poses is more than a pause.
