Why Rishikesh Is Called the Yoga Capital of the World (And Why Your Soul Is Calling You Here)
Namaste, beautiful souls!
This is a welcome back to the Maa Shakti Yog blog. Unless we have met, suppose we are sitting across from each other, perhaps with a warm cup of masala chai in our hands, and looking down the sacred Ganges River. We are thrilled you’re here.
Being yoga instructors who happen to be living right here in the middle of this magical town, we are more of a target of this particular question by the students who come to us, representing all different parts of the world:
“Why Rishikesh? Why is it that of all the spots on the planet, this little town in the Himalayan foothills is the Yoga Capital of the World?
It’s a wonderful question. It is not merely the catchy marketing expression of a mere marketing slogan but an Earth-old, spiritual, unbelievably energetic truth of thousands of years, which you have to touch in order to believe.
Unless you have been drawn to yoga in Rishikesh, or you are daydreaming of taking your practice to the next level with a teacher training, you can relax. We should discuss the reason why this sacred place is the final stop in your spiritual trip.
1. The Geography of Grace: The meeting place of the Himalayas and the Ganga.
To begin with, we must mention location.
Rishikesh is not a place anywhere. It is seated snugly in the cadre of the grand Himalayas, just as the sacred Mother Ganga (Ganges River) falls out of the mountains and starts her flow across the plains.
One can feel a vibration here. Prana—life force energy—is a lot discussed in yoga. Believe me, the prana in Rishikesh is a turbo-charged one. It is mountain-fresh mountain air, a breath full of the vitality of the primeval wood, and the tumbling river is a hearty, purifying kind of everlasting chant.
When you do your yoga in Rishikesh, you are not merely moving your body on a mat in a room. You are breathing air millennia-sustaining sages, and you are working by waters thought to wash away karma. The surroundings contribute to your practice as nothing a city studio can.
2. The Ancient Footsteps: Thousand Years of Sadhana.

Rishikesh was not given the title of the Yoga Capital of the World by a contemporary tourism council. It has acquired this title in thousands of years.
Rishi means “seer” or “sage,” and Kesh means “hair” (usually related to Lord Shiva). This is the “Place of the Sages.”
Now, centuries of yoga, rishis, and spiritual seekers have abandoned the material world to hike into these same mountains to meditate in caves, engage in deep sadhana (spiritual discipline), and find enlightenment.
When you arrive here, you are pacing in their footsteps. Even soil is permeated with the vibrations of the many hours of meditations and chanting. You feel that lineage. It supports you. It is much easier to fall into a meditative state here since the trail has already been blazed by others who preceded us.In our daily life here at Maa Shakti Yog, we are constantly reminded that this living tradition is not something to be studied from books, but something to be felt, practiced, and lived in the same spirit it has been for centuries.
We are extremely proud to be carrying on this tradition at Maa Shakti Yog Rishikesh, passing on the traditional knowledge in the very place it was to be imparted.
3. The Beatles Effect and the Bridge to the West.
Although the old traditions are deep, we must also admit to the recent boom as well.
A small group, whom you may have heard of, the Beatles, came to Rishikesh in the late sixties to learn about Transcendental Meditation in the ashram of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (now popularly called The Beatles Ashram).
Their visit served as a megaphone, which spread the spiritual energy of Rishikesh to the Western world. Suddenly, Europeans, Americans, and other seekers came to know that there was a place they could visit and get something better than the materialistic West.
It opened the doors. Nowadays, Rishikesh is a lovely fusion of East and West. You will find old Sadhus in saffron robes strolling with backpackers with rolled-up yoga mats. It is a colorful community that is vibrant and has one thing in mind, and that is growth.
4. Immersion: You cannot get it at home.

Why drive this much distance when you can have a fantastic yoga studio in your neighborhood?
At home, yoga is an hour in the morning before you have to go off to work or take up the kids.
Yoga is a way of life in Rishikesh.
As soon as you arrive here to go on a retreat or a yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, you get sucked in. You get up when the temple bells ring, you eat Sattvic food, you come to Ganga Aarti (the fire ceremony) at sunset, and you are mixed among hundreds of others on the very same road.
The daily distractions of everyday life are put aside, and you have the room to look inwards. It is then that the actual change occurs. It is not only about mastering your downward dog but also about perfecting your relationship with yourself.
5. The center of genuine teachings.
Due to its history and energy, Rishikesh is attracting the best teachers. This place is the home of the masters of Hatha, Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Pranayama, and meditation that have dedicated their lifetimes to doing them.
We do not only teach the physical postures (asanas) at such schools as Maa Shakti Yog Rishikesh. We go deep into the philosophy of yoga, the anatomy in a yogic view, and the subtle energies of the body. We do not only teach the exercise part of yoga, which is commonly taught in the West.
Rishikesh is the place to get the original teachings, the pure ones, not watered down in the fashion of the times.
Is Rishikesh Calling You?
Rishikesh is not only a tourist spot but also a place that changes something within you. It is passionate, it is beautiful, and it is messy and yet very peaceful simultaneously.
It is the Yoga Capital since here the barrier between the material world and the spiritual one is a bit weaker.
You have the urge in your heart to come to India, feel that pull, and heed it. It is your instinct to tell you that you need to change something. We of Maa Shakti Yog would be pleased to host you in our family, serve you a cup of chai, and help you navigate your way around in this amazing town.
Up to this point, continue practicing, and continue shining.
Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.
